Our Vision

East Oakland Pride Elementary prepares scholars to be global citizens that are passionate problem-solvers, college and career ready and are socially and emotionally competent with a life-long desire for learning.

Our Mission

Through effective collaboration and caring and nurturing community, all adults challenge students with high academic expectations and rigorous instruction that will empower them as learners and inspire all students to reach their full academic, social- emotional, and physical potential.

Our Beliefs About Student Learning

We believe that all children can learn and that it is our responsibility as educators to help students to develop into effective learners. Effective learning requires that students take control of their own learning. Students need to know that learning in life and in school is not about how smart they are, but how they are smart.

Academics

At East Oakland PRIDE, we are proud to offer students high-quality instruction in the core academic subject areas (reading, writing, math, science, and social studies) as well as many enrichment opportunities, including physical education, art, music, library, and garden.

School Culture

At East Oakland PRIDE, we believe in building a strong school community. Every classroom holds daily Morning Meetings where students play games, practice academics in fun ways, and get to know each other. This is the main way that we develop EOP's culture and teach students about our core values: Pride, Respect, Intelligence, Determination, and Empowerment.

Literacy

PRIDE's literacy program takes an individualized approach to teaching reading and writing, as students read and write at a level appropriate to their skills while receiving instruction to help them advance. We also engage students in analysis and discussion of complex texts in order to prepare them for the demands of college, career and citizenship. Our instructional approaches include:

  • Reading Workshop
  • Writing Workshop
  • Guided Reading
  • Systematic Instruction in Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, and Sight Words (SIPPS) (K-2 English)
  • Estrellita phonics instruction (K-2 Spanish)

Math

EOP uses a math program called Zearn.  Students proceed at their own pace through the Zearn Missions, and meet regularly with their teachers to address any misunderstandings or to apply their learning at a deeper level.

Science

East Oakland PRIDE scholars engage in FOSS Science Investigations. The FOSS curriculum provides students with hands-on science experiences that support students to develop a deep understanding of complex science content.

Enrichment

Students receive regular art lessons from skilled art teachers from the Museum of Children's Art (MOCHA), who help students develop their skills of creative self-expression. Students also grow food in our school garden, receive weekly music classes, and participate in physical education twice a week.
